The community was first settled in 1849, and by 1852, 20 families lived in the community. The city was initially given the name Draperville after William Draper, who was the first elder of the local Mormon congregations. The name was later shortened to its current one.
Today, roughly half of all households had children living in them, with the average family size being 3.69. Over three-quarters of the households consist of married couples. The population is fairly young. Approximately 32% of people are under the age of 18, and less than 5% are 65 years or older.
Like other areas of Utah, the region sees quite a bit of snowfall during the late fall and winter. The average temperatures range from 30 degrees to 50 degrees during his time. In the summer, temperatures are in the 80s and 90s, and late afternoon thunderstorms are common during this season.
Whatever the season, many people enjoy heading due East to the mountains of the Wasatch Range. The Lone Peak Wilderness area borders the town, and Mount Baldy and Mount Timpanogos are just a short drive. People can stick to easy, well-traveled trails if they’re looking for some exercise in the fresh air. There are maintained paths in the Little Valley Trail System, in Draper Cycle Park, and around the Bear Canyon Suspension Bridge. Or, they can go into the backcountry if they’re serious about hiking, mountain biking, or skiing. Other adventure seekers can literally fly through the air by trying paragliding. A few outfitters in the Traverse Mountains can make sure their guests have everything they need for a safe journey down to the ground.
The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is a popular attraction. It was opened in 2014 and has exhibits that display over 450 species. In the summer, people can cool off by visiting the Cowabunga Bay Water Park.
Kids and amateur athletes can get in action at one of the many sports fields in town. Local parks, like the Steep Mountain Park and the Lynn Ballard Ball Park, have soccer fields, baseball fields, and basketball courts in addition to other features.
The area is large enough to support its own police department, several municipal organizations, and the Draper City Journal. Through this newspaper, residents can keep up to date with developments related to city government, public schools, sports teams, and cultural events. Those events include numerous daytime and evening activities held at the Amphitheater. There are family-friendly movie nights and concerts that are put on throughout the year. Attendees can enjoy great entertainment while having an expansive view of the foothills in the background.
Shopping and dining options are varied. There are big, chain establishments that offer just about anything you could be looking for, and there are some independently-owned places where you can shop and support local business owners. A more diverse array of ethnic food is located in Salt Lake City, and most of the places are within a half hour drive.
The latest data for the city shows that the median income is $80,524. For a family, that median income is $89,871. Only 2.7% of the population has an income below the poverty line.
With a relatively high average level of income, the community boasts numerous housing opportunities. The majority of properties are single family homes. There are also condos and townhouses available on the market. Like other areas in Utah, the community has grown significantly in the past 20 years, and many of the homes have been built during that time. New construction is available for buyers interested in building custom homes and taking advantage of modern materials. In general, smaller lots are more concentrated around the city center, and larger properties are found towards the mountains. A big selling point for many places is the view of the mountains and the valley.
The median price of homes is $439,550, and the median list price per square foot is $188. This puts it in a higher range than Salt Lake City and several other suburbs. In the past few years, home values have been rising, making it an ideal time to invest in real estate.
The largest employers are the Utah State Prison and eBay, both of which employ over one thousand employees. Other large companies that employ several hundred people each include 1-800 Contacts, Swire Coca-Cola, Edwards Lifesciences, and Affiliated Computer Services. Many locals have a short commute and work at one of these organizations, and others travel a bit further to work in Salt Lake City or in neighboring suburbs.
