Lehi, Utah Information
Just south of Salt Lake City, Lehi, Utah, is a premier technology and commercial center and the fifth fastest-growing city in the country. As the Beehive State’s sixth oldest city, Lehi also has a rich narrative to tell, steeped in both the history of the pioneers of the old west and the cutting edge of the current tech boom.
Settled by Mormon trailblazers in 1850, the city grew rapidly and was incorporated in 1852, taking its name from a prophet in the Book of Mormon. To commemorate this past, the downtown area has been designated as a historic district by the National Park Service, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The district was designated in 1998 and contains 19 buildings, some dating from as far back as 1891.
Also on the National Register of Historic Places is Lehi Roller Mills, a flour mill founded in 1906 by a co-op of farmers and owned by the Robinson family since 1910. Though designated as a historic place in 1994, the mill was immortalized in the 1984 film Footloose, featured as Ren McCormack’s (Kevin Bacon) workplace and as the site of the infamous dance. As one of the last proud, family-owned mills operating in the United States, the mill has persevered for over a century. Even today, high demand keeps them working around the clock, producing more than 100,000 pounds of flour each day.
Thanksgiving Point is another highlight of the city: a unique museum complex and botanical garden offering shopping, restaurants, and other entertainment options, showcasing all that the city has to offer. Founded in 1995, Thanksgiving Point consists of five main attractions: Thanksgiving Point Gardens, Thanksgiving Point Golf Course, the Museum of Ancient Life, the Museum of Natural Curiosity and Farm Country. The complex is a nonprofit organization and draws approximately 1.5 million people each year.
While not forgetting about the past, the city has recently begun transitioning from an agricultural economy to a technological one. Micron Technology’s microchip plant was the first step on this journey, eventually evolving into IM Flash Technologies, a flash memory business founded by both Micron and the Intel Corporation and headquartered in the city. 1 out of every 14 flash memory chips in the world is produced there. Several other landmark companies also call the city home, including Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle, Vivint, Xactware, and Xango. Most recently, Ancestry.com arrived, moving their headquarters from Provo to The Corporate Center at Traverse Mountain, on the northern edge of the city.
Nestled between the Wasatch Mountains on the east and the White and Oquirrh Mountains on the west, Lehi is also an outdoorsman’s dream, with hiking, biking, camping, fishing and many more activities readily accessible. Utah Lake is located just to the south, while the Jordan River runs through the city. Meanwhile, Twin Peaks, Flat Top and Mahogany Mountains, the Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and two national forests are all just a short drive away.
The city provides a full range of municipal services, including but not limited to excellent police, fire, and emergency medical services; construction of new and maintenance of existing city infrastructure; numerous water systems; solid waste collection; and commercial and residential building inspection to keep the growing city in top notch shape. The city is also home to lush parks, plenty of recreational opportunities (including a recreation center and two pools), and many city-sponsored cultural events.
Getting around is a breeze, as I-15 runs through the city, with four convenient exits. On the public transportation front, the Utah Transit Authority maintains a bus system that operates throughout the city. As well, a FrontRunner South commuter rail station opened near Thanksgiving Point in 2012, connecting the city to Provo and Salt Lake City and making the entire state accessible.
The city was home to almost 60,000 people in 2015, up from 20,000 in 2000. Over 39% of the adult population has a bachelor’s or advanced degree. The latest US Census bureau reports the median household income from 2011-2015 was $77,662, up from $53,028 in 2000. As of February 2017, the median home value in the city is $277,500. The average cost of a 3 bedroom, 2 bath rental property is over $1,500 per month.
With a rich history, a proud heritage, and a booming technology center, Lehi, Utah is a city on the rise. Demand is growing and the city is more than keeping up.
