South Jordan, Utah Information
An agricultural town for most of its early history, South Jordan, Utah, is currently a rapidly growing bedroom community in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Voted one of the “Top 20 best places to live in America” in 2010, 2012, 2014 by Money Magazine, “SoJo,” as the locals call it, is less than 20 miles from both Downtown Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Regional Airport. South Jordan was also the first city in not just Utah, but the world, to have two Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temples.
South Jordan, Utah, has been inhabited for nearly 2000 years, making it one of the oldest settlements in the country. Originally occupied by the ancestral Fremont tribes, the Native Americans had moved out by the time the first Mormon pioneers arrived in the mid-1800s. The city proper was founded along the banks of the Jordan River, just south of Salt Lake City, in 1859.
In the last few decades of the 1800s, alfalfa hay was the primary product of the agrarian city. The product could be used as feed for livestock and stored through the winter. Shortly afterwards, sugar beets were introduced to the area. Because sugar beets could be sold at the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company factory in nearby West Jordan, they quickly became the primary crop. In fact, sugar beet farming was so integral to the city’s well-being that Jordan High School named its mascot the “beetdigger.”
In the last 50 years, however, due to population growth and urbanization, available farmland has dwindled. The city has in turn adapted to becoming a bedroom community for Salt Lake City.
Notable residents of the city include two famous Olympians: Apolo Anton Ohno, a short track speed skating athlete and the most decorated American Winter Olympic athlete of all time. Denise Parker, an archer, was a former resident, three time Summer Olympic athlete, and the youngest member of the 1988 U.S Summer Olympic team. Parker is currently Chief Executive Officer of USA Archery, the national governing body for the sport.
The city lies in the Salt Lake Valley between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains, with the Jordan River flowing through the middle. The city has an over 3 mile section of the Jordan River Parkway that has trails, parks, fishing ponds and a natural wildlife habitat.
In addition, the city has over 25 other municipal parks and playgrounds, including Bolton Park in the northwest, Riverfront Park, and the massive City Park along Redwood Road.
Riverfront Park has two ponds stocked with catfish and trout, while City Park has several sports greens available for lacrosse, soccer, softball, baseball, and football, as well as several tennis courts and a skate park. There is also a 120-acre Equestrian Park with stables, indoor arenas and a horse racing track, as well as a dressage and polo field.
Within the city, there is also an Aquatic and Fitness center, a senior-oriented Community Center, and an outdoor ice skating rink, as well as two executive golf courses and Mulligan’s miniature golf.
For hikers, there are two combined biking and pedestrian trails that weave through the city. In the northwest is the half-mile Bingham Creek Trail, while the 3.5 mile Jordan River Parkway trail runs north-to-south for the length of the city.
And, finally, for angler, Oquirrh Lake is stocked with bigmouth bass, catfish, bluegill, and trout. Kayaking, canoeing, and sail boating, are also allowed on the lake.
The TRAX light rail runs through the city, as well as the FrontRunner commuter rail, connecting the city to Salt Lake City and Provo.
South Jordan has six elementary schools, two middle schools and four high schools, as well as three private schools and two charter schools. Salt Lake Community College’s Jordan Campus is also located within the city, along with Roseman University of Health Sciences, for students studying dentistry, pharmacy, or an accelerated nursing program.
36.4% of the population have a college degree, and 96.8% are high school graduates, one of the highest numbers in the state. The latest US Census bureau reports the median household income between 2011-2015 was $91,199. As of February 2016, the median home value in the city is $334,500. The average cost of a 3 bedroom, 2 bath rental property is over approximately $1,800 per month.
South Jordan, Utah, is a booming community with a burgeoning arts scene, rich in recreational activities and a short drive from Downtown Salt Lake City.
